International Patent Law

Instructor: Dean Palmer

Course Outline: This course compares and contrasts patent law and practice in three key jurisdictions: Canada, the US and the EU. Topics covered will include patent law issues and practice points regarding searching, drafting, prosecution, validity and infringement. The technology theme will be environmentally conscious (alternative) power, architecture and products, an area in which the instructor works. Guest lecturers will introduce some specialized areas. Strategic issues to enhance patent portfolios will be discussed. Evaluation is by paper or draft patent application, at the option of the student. Papers on any jurisdiction of interest related to patent law are welcomed. Materials are primarily online, with additional materials to be provided.

INTERNET LAW (BLAW 3205)

Instructor: Dean Palmer

Course Outline: Internet Law - This course explores the law pertaining to the Internet including copyright, trademark, online business method patents, domain names, online contracts, and jurisdictional issues. Liability issues related to linking, meta-tags, framing, and advertising and marketing will be examined. The course will focus on recent legal developments in various jurisdictions including Europe, the United States and Canada. Knowledge of law relating to the Internet and e-commerce will be conveyed in a lecture and workshop setting involving exercises, role-plays and case studies. (3 credits)

INTERNATIONAL LAW (BLAW 3425)

Instructor: Dean Palmer

Course Outline: International Law - This course explores international trade law and practice including: Contract Formation, Dispute Resolution, Transportation Terms, Cargo Risk Management and Insurance, Title and related documents, INCO-transportation Terms, Intellectual Property in international trade. No prerequisite. Knowledge of International Trade practices is critical in the new global economy.

BUSINESS LAW (BLAW 3100)

Course Outline A practical study of Canadian computer, internet and general business law. including the legal system and structure. Topics include, but are not limited to sale of goods and consumer transactions; computer-related employment law issues; business organizations; intellectual property (including copyrights, patents, confidential information); software/music piracy, licensing, website liability issues, electronic commerce; computer crime, internet ethics, & privacy issues; (4 Credits)

Law for Intelligence-based Business (TMGT 7133)

Instructor: Dean Palmer

Course Outline: Assists those working in complicated technologically intensive businesses to understand and to function within the legal environment. Focus is placed on the nature of the legal system and its institutions generally, as well as selected areas of law vital to the functioning of Canadian business. The course also relates law to modern business practice especially in the field of ethics. (1 Credit)
